What to do after a tattoo session?

Congratulations, you just got a tattoo! But the adventure doesn’t stop there. The healing phase is essential to ensure that your tattoo remains beautiful and sharp. Here are the key steps to take good care of your new tattoo and avoid complications.

The first hours after the session

Your tattoo artist will probably apply plastic wrap or a specific bandage to your tattoo. It is there to protect the freshly inked area from bacteria and friction. In general, you should keep it on for between 2 and 6 hours, depending on your tattoo artist's recommendations. Some use second skin film, which can be kept for up to 24-48 hours.

Once removed, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild soap (perfume-free and antibacterial). Avoid too hot water and above all don’t scratch! Dab the area with a clean towel or paper towel to dry it.

Care to follow in the first days

Daily hydration : After cleansing, apply a thin layer of healing cream (such as Bepanthen, Cicaplast or a cream recommended by your tattoo artist). Too much cream can prevent the skin from breathing and slow healing, so apply just enough.

Avoid friction and tight clothing. Wear loose cotton clothing to avoid irritation. If your tattoo is on an exposed area, be careful of objects that could rub (belt, backpack, bra, etc.).

Don't scratch, even if it itches! During healing, your tattoo will peel and itch, but don't scratch! This could tear off scabs and affect the quality of the drawing. Tap lightly around if necessary, but no scratches.

What to avoid during healing

🚫 No exposure to the sun : UV rays can damage your tattoo and alter the colors. If you have to go out, cover it with clothes. Once healed, always apply sunscreen to your tattoo when it is exposed.

🚫 No swimming pool, sauna or prolonged bathing : stagnant water contains bacteria which could cause infections. Take quick showers and avoid soaking your tattoo.

🚫 No excess alcohol and tobacco : alcohol thins the blood and can slow down healing. Tobacco, on the other hand, reduces blood circulation and can affect skin regeneration.

🚫 No intense sport : sweating and friction can aggravate irritation and slow down healing. If the tattoo is on a stressed area (arm, leg, back), avoid repetitive movements.

The following weeks

Approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the session, your tattoo will have passed the first stages of healing. It may appear a little dull or dry, but that's normal: the skin is still regenerating. Continue to moisturize your tattoo with a light cream and always avoid direct sunlight.

If after a few days, your tattoo is red, swollen, painful or oozing yellowish fluid, consult a doctor: it could be an infection

For a tattoo that remains beautiful over time

  • Moisturizes regularly even after healing. Well-nourished skin retains pigments better.

  • Protect from the sun with SPF 50 sunscreen to prevent your tattoo from fading prematurely.

  • Make touch-ups if necessary : sometimes certain areas may lose a little ink. Don’t hesitate to contact your tattoo artist to see if a touch-up is necessary after a few months.

With this care, your tattoo will stay beautiful and sharp for years. Enjoy your new skin art! 😊
